One casual drink turned into a 6-hour wine-athon at California Vintage. And what a wonderful way to spend a Saturday night.

Rustic and cosy, the California-themed wine bar is not only committed to serving the finest wines from the Golden State, but also to educating and entertaining both wine connoisseurs and casual drinkers alike.

The wine bar has partnered directly with a select group of 22 family-owned wineries from throughout California. Admire the considerable time that the owners have spent creating a seasonal pairing menu—grouping select wines with certain dishes. Each food item on the menu is arranged according to which grape varieties suit the ingredients in the meal.

Beer Batter Fried Green Beans

Green beans and lemon slices lightly coated with beer batter, crisp fried and served with house-made Green Goddess dressing and aioli dip. Tasty snack that went down well with R&B Cellars‘ “Serenade in Blanc” to start the evening.

Tacos with Grilled Flank Steak and Chimichurri Sauce

To pair with 2004 RustRidge from the Chiles Valley region of Napa, I picked the soft corn tacos topped with sliced marinated and grilled Harris Ranch flank steak, served with house-made sauce of parsley, cilantro and lime juice. Steak was a little bit overcooked for my taste and was a tad too dry, but the sour note in the sauce managed to salvage the tacos. The wine’s component of cherry and cassis with a touch of anise and blackberry was perfect for this dish.

Slider Trio

As the party grew, we continued our love of Cabernet Sauvignon and ordered a bottle of 2005 R&B Cellars, Reserve, and of course more food. Brian picked one of California Vintage’s signature trio plates (with pairing of white, rose and red wine).

Chocolate Pot de Creme

To top off a perfect evening with my favourite people, something sweet was called for. The Chocolate Pot de Creme was silky, creamy and chocolatey, great pairing for the full-bodied, fruity red wine. Before we knew it, we spent 6 hours at the wine bar and no one wanted to leave.
