Coffee 2: mini dans la ville

Glad to see there is a surge of artisanal coffee shops in Hong Kong, most of which are reasonably priced and accessible. After my last review of one that specialises in single-origin beans, one cannot forget Italy, where coffee is a fundamental part of life.

The espresso coffee, a symbolic drink of the Italian Lifestyle. In Italy, coffee is art and culture; in the world, the Italian espresso coffee is the symbol and the representative of refinement and taste in a rich and fragrant cup. And mini dans la ville has brought us a taste of this straight from Southern Italy.

The owner chose to join the numerous eateries at The Pemberton in Sheung Wan, itself a culinary destination in the area boasting many restaurants and private kitchens. As I walked into the cafe, I was welcomed by a Mini Cooper, reminding me of the film The Italian Job in which the beloved Mk1 Austin Mini Cooper S’s starred as accomplices in a multi-million dollar gold heist that’s not so much about getting the money as it is about getting even.

However, Mini Cooper is not the focus, as much as the owner’s obsession can be seen in every corner of the cafe. It’s the coffee that I came here for.

Little retail corner – coffee beans and coffee makers

mini dans la ville distributes beans by Trucillo, an Italian coffee company, and endeavours to popularise the Italian espresso in Hong Kong. You can also find high quality coffee makers such as DeLonghi fully automatic espresso coffee maker here.

The cafe is spacious with concrete floor and high tables dotted around, and a glass-fronted bar/deli where you can order a smoothie or a coffee and sweets to go. The menu is also fairly comprehensive, offering choices from pastas to burgers to mussels and oysters.

Concrete floor, high tables and casual vibe

I was eager to try the coffee here as Jonathan Bruno Koo, the founder of the Hong Kong Barista Association, is the director/trainer of the baristas here.

Latte in true Naplese fashion

Only beans which are whole and completely ripe are picked, and the intense aroma was developed by the traditional slow-roasting process. With its fullness combined generously with body yet boasting elegance offset by roundness, I am hooked. Silky, smooth and velvety, this is the perfect cup for a rainy afternoon.
